Borrowbook browser extension · Last updated 5 November 2026

Borrowbook shows whether the libraries you add in its settings have a book as an ebook in Libby. It has no account, no servers of its own and no analytics. This page lists everything it reads, sends and stores.

01What it reads

  • Book pages: on StoryGraph — and on Goodreads or the Amazon stores you switch on in settings — the book’s title and author from the page you’re viewing.
  • Highlighted text: only when you press the shortcut or choose “Check Libby for …” from the right-click menu, the text you highlighted in the current tab.

It does not read anything else on those pages, and it never reads your accounts, shelves, reading history, purchases or any other personal information.

02What it sends, and to whom

  • That title and author (or the highlighted text) is sent to OverDrive’s public library catalogue (thunder.api.overdrive.com), once for each library you added, to look up ebook availability.
  • When you add a library, its Libby key (for example yourlibrary) is sent to the same catalogue to check that it exists.

Nothing is sent anywhere else. No data is sold, shared or used for advertising. OverDrive’s handling of these requests is covered by OverDrive’s privacy policy.

03What it stores

  • Settings — your libraries, their labels and colours, and display options — in Chrome’s extension storage. If you use Chrome Sync, Chrome syncs them across your browsers.
  • Lookup results are cached in your browser for up to 3 hours (titles a library has) or 3 days (titles it doesn’t), so repeat visits are fast. You can clear this cache in settings at any time.

04Permissions

  • storage — saving your settings and cached results.
  • Access to thunder.api.overdrive.com — checking library catalogues.
  • Access to app.thestorygraph.com — showing results on StoryGraph book pages.
  • Optional access to Goodreads and Amazon stores — only requested when you switch a site on in settings, and removable there.
  • scripting, activeTab, contextMenus — showing results for highlighted text in the current tab, only when you ask for it.

05Deleting your data

Uninstalling Borrowbook removes all of its settings and cached results from your browser.
